Year 4 - Summer Term 2009

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the Summer Term! We hope you all had a great Easter break. It’s hard to believe that we are already two thirds through the year. Nonetheless, there is still a lot to look forward to and we are all determined to finish the year with a flourish. Here is a brief overview of the curriculum we will be covering during this term.

Literacy
We will be following the Renewed Literacy Framework, which will include studying short stories/novels that cover particular issues (e.g. bullying, racism), using texts such as ‘Bill’s New Frock’ and ‘The Angel of Nitshill Road’ as well as other texts by Anne Fine.
Within non-fiction texts we aim to examine the way persuasive language is used in adverts, posters, etc.
Numeracy
The children will continue to practise and develop their oral and mental calculation skills, in particular for the school’s Levels Tests.  We hope that you agree that regular practise of times tables is important and encourage your child to spend some time each week working on knowing and remembering these important facts. They will also be revising and developing mental and written calculation strategies, including decimals (related to money) and fractions where appropriate and applying these to a range of problems. Other aspects of Maths that we will cover this term include; reading scales and making different measurements, Time and reading timetables, drawing different charts and graphs and interpreting data and symmetry and rotation of shape.
Science
During the first half of this term we will be studying different types of habitats and how the creatures are suited to where they live and cope with conditions. We will also be studying simple food chains and how to identify creatures using a key. Later in the term we will look at the topic of Growth and Movement. In particular we will be studying the skeleton… its parts, its purpose and how it moves. We will also be looking at how muscles work.

Monday 7th June is Science Week! Keep an eye for the details to follow!

ICT
The children will use the Internet as a research tool to back up our studies. We will also be using the computer to sort and classify insect/animals (linked to science) and draw different graphs to present and analyse data we have collected. We will also continue to make use of Fronter… be sure to chat with your children about how we are using it.
Design and Technology
An interesting unit of work is planned for this term on money containers… we will be looking at some examples, considering their design and then making our own! We will use what we learn in our Humanities topic on Ancient Greece to inspire our designs.
Humanities
Our project on Ancient Greece will enable us to study the lifestyle of people from the past and examine their ideas beliefs and attitudes. This is an enjoyable topic and the children will be given the opportunity to research many areas independently and produce their own projects.
Art
The focus for our work this term will be related to the theme of Viewpoints, using different media and materials, including looking at the use of signs and symbols in art.
PE
This term we aim to make the most of beautiful weather and will be practicing and developing our cricket skills. Later in the term we will be concentrating on developing rounders and athletics. Health Fun and Fitness Week is also a big feature of this term (Mon 12th July)… Sports Days and more! Once again, details to follow.
Music
This term we will be exploring a range of singing games, and following a unit of work that focuses on ‘descriptive sounds.’
R.E.
A unit is planned on Islam where we will be exploring the beliefs and celebrations of the Muslim faith. We will also be looking at the Qur’an and the life of the Prophet Muhammad.
German
As well as all this, we will be continuing with the regular ‘German’ lessons, hopefully building your child’s confidence with the work covered so far and extending their vocabulary further. Do encourage the children to share their vocabulary with you!

Kingswood and Activity Week
As you know the trip to Kingswood is fast approaching and fun activities are also planned for the children who are not attending.

Homework
This will be given as usual during the week and at weekends. We also appreciate you reading with your child, every day if possible. The children make so much more progress when they read at home as well as at school. Times tables should also be practised as much as possible.

Thank you for your co-operation, we look forward to continuing a great year!

With our very best regards,

The Year 4 Team
