Oakthorpe Infant School and Oakthorpe Junior School were originally opened as separate schools in 1937. They were amalgamated in 1997 to form a single primary. In 2003 a new purpose built Year 6 block was added as a stepping stone into the future with up to date facilities including a Year 6 common room. The area represents a step towards children’s secondary education.
Our grounds include four playgrounds, an adventure playground, a grassed area for Reception children and a large field which has an environmental area and is used for a range of sports activities in the summer. The school is noted for the high standard of display in the corridors. There are two large halls used for assemblies, gymnastics, drama, dance, music and school meals. Drama is a strength of the school and we have a stage with full facilities for dramatic productions, including a sound system and lighting rig. Children have access to class sets of laptops, ipads, Chrome books and a range of other technology to support their learning in all subjects. Oakthorpe was recognised as being ‘Outstanding’ in our Ofsted inspection in February 2008. It has achieved many awards and has been successful as lead partner in the 2Schools Consortium in training many new teachers. In 2014 2Schools Consortium was graded “outstanding” by Ofsted. Also in 2014 we were awarded National Teaching School status which involves us in raising standards in other schools.
