Year Group Curriculum Information
At Oakthorpe we believe that the curriculum should promote a love of learning and willingness to explore. It should promote both learning and personal growth and development.
While there is a focus on literacy, mathematics and ICT, we ensure that we provide a broad and balanced curriculum for all our pupils. In addition to the National Curriculum and RE, our curriculum includes a wide range of activities and opportunities to enrich the children’s experiences. These include:
- Educational visits to enrich topics, for example visits to art galleries, museums, places of worship and the theatre
- Residential visits and camping
- Extra-curricular activities, for example, a wide range of sporting activities; and art, dance and science clubs
- Visitors from the local community
- School shows; drama, dance and music performances; and special assemblies
- Curriculum Weeks eg Book Week, Science Week and Heritage Week
Our curriculum also includes the ‘hidden curriculum’ – what the children learn from the school environment, the values we promote and how they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes, so that they achieve their true potential.
We are continually reviewing and improving the curriculum we offer to our children. The curriculum at Oakthorpe is evolving according to the needs of our children and to the aspirations of the staff and community.
Above all, we believe that children are entitled to receive a high quality curriculum that leads to the highest possible standards and to an enjoyment of learning.
