Geography

At Oakthorpe, our geography curriculum aims to inspire life-long curiosity and an interest and fascination in our diverse world and its people.

The aims of teaching geography in our school are to: provide real, relevant, immersive and purposeful opportunities for children to develop a secure understanding of the world around them.

Through the teaching of key skills, children will gain an understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Their enquiries are guided by the core geographical concepts of location, place, change and environment at varying scales, whilst investigating the processes and interconnections that occur within and between places.

The geography curriculum at Oakthorpe enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other areas of the curriculum and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and overall cultural capital. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject. Through our teaching, we intend to provoke questions and to encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through exploration and research to enable them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.
