Mathematics

Our curriculum for mathematics at Oakthorpe aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.  We want all children to have a positive sense of the subject.

We use high quality resources to inspire children and give teachers the time to teach, based on mastery schemes of learning.

We use a variety of curriculum resources to support this mastery approach, including White Rose Maths Hub schemes of work and NCETM (National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics) resources which ensure continuity and progression in the teaching of Mathematics.

Our maths teaching puts number at the heart, because confidence with numbers is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole. We aim to put depth into the children’s learning by reinforcing knowledge again and again. The teaching and learning of mathematics at our school encourages collaboration to help children progress together. There is a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving which we know gives children the skills to become competent and confident mathematicians.

Mathematics at Oakthorpe we believe should equip our children to exceed, we encourage and teach them to understand, to ask questions and to reason about their maths. Within that context they should enjoy maths, they should find challenge in the subject, as well as support to progress. Mathematics more than ever needs to be real and relevant for the 21St century and our children’s future.
