Reading

At Oakthorpe, once children have completed the systematic synthetic phonics teaching programme, we use the Destination Reader approach to teach reading. This usually begins towards the end of year 2 and continues throughout the whole of KS2. Destination Reader (DR) is an approach to teaching reading, which uses engaging, structured sessions that support children to read with greater understanding, enjoyment and purpose. At Oakthorpe, we strive to promote a strong love of reading and the DR approach really compliments this.

Our aim is to develop:

- a lifelong love of reading

- a consistent approach to teaching reading across the school

- reading stamina

- a rich and varied vocabulary

- reading skills to equip children to access age-related texts

- thinking skills and positive learning behaviours

In addition to DR sessions, children at Oakthorpe are also exposed to a diverse range of texts during their daily Literacy lessons. Our writing units are all based on model texts, which have been carefully chosen to inspire and challenge students.

As part of our enjoyable and engaging literacy curriculum, we host our very own Book Week. This week includes endless activities and experiences for the children, all centred around books. From author visits to dressing up…the children are fully immersed in a literature-rich environment.
