Science

Oakthorpe Primary School recognises and values the importance of a broad and balanced curriculum and Science is at the heart of that. Our intent is that all children leave Oakthorpe with a passion for learning, able to confidently explore the world around them. Pupils here have access to a high-quality Science curriculum which seeks to  encourage creativity, curiosity and questioning. Through the delivery of a coherent and carefully planned curriculum we aim to promote a lifelong love of science supported by an embedded set of skills in all areas of working scientifically.

At Oakthorpe, we aim for all children to:

  • have access to a range of practical resources and have opportunities to plan and conduct experiments and investigations. Stimulating and challenging experiences for all include the use of high-quality resources including Data-logging equipment (used to measure light, temperature and sound), microscopes, electrical components, magnifiers and other specialised equipment. All equipment is available for children to select and use in their learning.
  • be able to use our local area - this will be a focus for our children as they make observations and extend their learning further. Identify a range of plants and animals, participate in a range of learning walks, observe seasonal changes, plant and harvest and learn about pollination. The school’s outdoor areas provide this additional dimension to their learning.
  • develop their understanding and use of a rich Science vocabulary.
  • make choices about moving their learning on (within the topics taught) and they will be encouraged to share their own areas of interest and expertise. This will further enable children to make links between their science learning and their own experiences of the wider world.
  • ask (and find ways to answer) questions, reflecting their curiosity about the world around them. They will become aware of their place in the local and global community through their research about climate change, linking their learning to other areas of the curriculum..
  • research and meet real-life scientists that reflect our diverse school community. It is vital that our children are able to see careers in Science as accessible for all.

At Oakthorpe, we use the structure of the National curriculum to ensure excellent coverage of skills. Alongside this we provide carefully sequenced weekly Science lessons, a range of visitors from the science community, trips linked to the Science curriculum, a full and engaging Science week, an annual Science Fair, a range of Family Learning Events and links to our local community (local businesses, community action groups and other schools). Through all of this,  we ensure the inclusion of a wide range of experiences for our children. We are passionate about ensuring that our children leave Oakthorpe Primary School prepared for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of secondary school and the wider world beyond.
