Writing

At Oakthorpe school we aim to help children develop into imaginative learners who develop a love of language and the written word through exposure to rich, high quality texts. We want our children to draw upon a rich exposure to quality literature so that throughout the writing process, they can write as a reader and read as a writer.

The writing curriculum at Oakthorpe encourages children to immerse themselves in different text types and write for a variety of purposes, whilst also building a secure knowledge of spelling and grammar. We intend to promote a sense of independence in writing, whilst being inclusive and enriching. A progression grid for spelling and grammar can be found on the phonics section of this website.

Our aim is to ensure that every child is able to see themselves as a 'writer' and has the ability to write with confidence and creativity in all curriculum subjects.  This curriculum is reviewed regularly to ensure that children are exposed to a range of current and diverse texts and authors. At Oakthorpe we follow a writing sequence, which is very much centred on creating a love of literature and sparking imagination..

We follow the Nelson handwriting scheme and regularly teach the correct formation and joins of letters. This supports developing writing stamina and reinforces our high expectations.
