Sustainability
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At Oakthorpe Primary School, we are committed to creating a sustainable future for our pupils, our community and the wider world. We recognise our responsibility to reduce our environmental impact while empowering children with the knowledge, skills and values they need to become responsible global citizens.
Our Sustainability Action Plan (2025–2030) sets out a clear and ambitious approach to caring for the environment. Through improving energy efficiency, conserving water, reducing waste, promoting sustainable travel and enhancing green spaces and biodiversity, we aim to significantly lower our carbon footprint and make better use of natural resources. Practical measures such as energy-saving initiatives, recycling programmes, school gardens and eco-friendly travel choices help us to protect the environment both now and for the future.
Sustainability is also central to our pupils’ learning and wellbeing. Children are actively involved through Eco-Leaders, student-led campaigns and hands-on experiences such as gardening, food waste audits and environmental challenges. These opportunities develop leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills, while fostering a strong sense of responsibility, resilience and respect for the natural world. Learning outdoors and engaging with real-life environmental issues also supports physical health, mental wellbeing and a deeper connection to nature.
By working together with staff, governors, families and the wider community, we aim to embed sustainable practices into everyday school life. We regularly monitor and review our progress, celebrating successes and continually striving to do better. At Oakthorpe Primary School, sustainability is not just a goal - it is a shared commitment to ensuring a healthier planet and a brighter future for our children.
